The Netherlands Government fallen!

Rutte IV cabinet dropped over asylum policy

THE HAGUE - The Rutte IV cabinet has fallen. The asylum talks, which have dragged on for months, have torn apart the alliance between VVD, D66, CDA and CU. A final attempt to reach agreement in a crisis consultation on Friday also failed.

With that, the Netherlands can prepare for new elections, likely in the fall. The cabinet will meet as a whole Friday evening around 9:30 p.m., after which Prime Minister Rutte will give a press conference.

The parties in government have long been diametrically opposed to each other on asylum measures. This week that sensitive dossier came to a head, in which the differences between VVD and CDA on the one hand and D66 and CU on the other were great. Especially between VVD and CU clashed sharply around measures to limit family reunification. The differences proved unbridgeable.

On Friday it was already noticeable that things were especially restless on the CU desks. Prior to the crisis consultations, the MPs of the smallest coalition party had already huddled together, after which group leader Bikker continued speaking with the CU ministers. And after Deputy Prime Minister Schouten and State Secretary Van Ooijen left for the crisis consultations at the Ministry of General Affairs, group members, as well as Agriculture Minister Adema, continued to nervously scurry about the corridors.
