31 years ago today, on February 12, 1993, Toby Keith released his debut single, “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.”
Toby Keith was inspired to write his now-signature hit during a hunting trip to Dodge City, Kansas. According to Toby, he and his friends found themselves watching as a fellow hunter mustered up the courage to ask a cowgirl to dance. She ultimately rejected him, choosing instead to dance with a handsome young cowboy who invited her on the dance floor. This prompted one of Keith’s friends to exclaim “John, you should’ve been a cowboy.”
The simplicity of that single line sparked immediate inspiration for a song in Keith’s mind.
“So I thought, ‘I’m going to write that.’ I took my guitar, sat on the side of the motel tub, and shut the door so no one could hear me,” Keith recalled.
And just like that, in a mere 20 minutes, Toby Keith wrote one of his most significant hit songs. Toby included it on a demo tape that numerous record labels rejected before Mercury Records finally gave the singer a chance.
“Should’ve Been A Cowboy” quickly rose in popularity, becoming one of the most played country songs of the ’90s and launched Toby’s career. The song became his first No. 1 hit and was certified triple platinum by the RIAA.
