House condemns socialism as 8 Democrats break with their party to pass resolution
Republicans in Congress are putting the fight against socialism at the center of their messaging ahead of the November midterms, with a House vote this week also highlighting divisions among Democrats. The House passed a Republican-backed resolution condemning socialism Tuesday in a 220-192 vote. Eight Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the measure, while two Democrats voted present. “In case anyone needs a refresher, these people support open borders, dismantling our military, eliminating the free market,” Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., said, arguing that socialism is “blatantly anti-American.” Democrats pushed back, accusing Republicans of applying the socialism label to popular government programs. “Social Security. Republicans condemn that as socialism. Medicare. Socialism. Medicaid. Socialism. Public schools. Socialism,” Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., said. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, was among the Democrats who supported the resolution, telling Politico that “socialism is not a good word for us” and “it just never worked.” The measure also endorsed the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. That provision drew opposition from Democrats, including some who have previously spoken out against socialism. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries voted against the resolution, calling it an attempt by Republicans to advance “toxic voter suppression legislation.”
